Cox College Interprofessional Simulation & Education Center is pleased to present a two day class designed as a comprehensive review session for nurses preparing to take the Maternal-Newborn certification exam.


  • Determine potential risk factors for the mother and fetus/newborn based on the maternal medical and obstetric history.
  • Outline the physiologic changes that occur during pregnancy.
  • Describe the components of the focused postpartum assessment, including physical and psychosocial elements.
  • Identify common problems as well as complications of the postpartum mother.
  • Summarize the management and patient teaching related to lactation and newborn nutrition.
  • Determine the elements needed for newborn stabilization and resuscitation.
  • Explain the newborn’s process of transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life.
  • Discuss the elements of the newborn physical assessment and variations in findings for each body system.
  • Discuss commonly used medications in the newborn period.
  • Outline frequently identified newborn complications, related signs and symptoms, and their treatment.
  • Identify the nurse’s responsibilities related to nursing research, guidelines for practice, quality outcome measurements, and ethical/legal issues.

Ashley Larkin, RNC-OB, BSN
A southwest Missouri native, has been a Maternal-Newborn nurse since 2008. Her career has been spent as a staff Labor and Delivery nurse as well as a clinical educator for the Labor and Delivery and Women and Newborn care areas. As a result, she applies real-world bedside knowledge with current evidence-based research in all of her educational offerings. She resides in upstate New York with her husband.

Cancellations up to November 6, 2014 will be entitled to a full refund and must be received in writing via email at educationcenter@coxcollege.edu or by calling the Cox College Interprofessional Simulation & Education Center (CC IPSEC) at 417-269-4117. For cancellations between November 6-12, 2014 a $25 processing fee will be withheld. No refunds will be made for cancellations received the day of the activity.

In the event Cox College Interprofessional Simulation & Education Center cancels or reschedules a course, participants are entitled to a full refund or the participant may transfer registration to the next scheduled activity. Cox College is not responsible for travel, hotel, booking fees, or other cancellation fees for registrants when an activity is cancelled.
