With the new nationwide mandated coding system (changing from ICD-9 to ICD-10) coming in 2014, coders must be aware of more detailed anatomy and physiology. Accurate coding is imperative to receive optimal reimbursement. This on-line course will explore advanced anatomy and physiology concepts relevant to ICD-10 diagnostic codes, and is intended for inpatient and outpatient coders. Participants will gain greater knowledge for more accurate coding and reimbursement.

Module 1: Human Body and Tissue and Integument Systems (1.0 CEU AHIMA; 1.5 AAPC Continuing Education Hours)

  • Identify body cavities, body planes, and positional terms
  • Describe homeostasis
  • Distinguish divisions of the abdomen
  • Define categories of tissues and their locations
  • Express the layers and accessory structures of the integument system
  • Describe the functions of the integument system

Module 2: The Skeletal and Muscular Systems (1.0 CEU AHIMA; 1.0 AAPC Continuing Education Hours)

  • Identify the structure of bones, bone formation, and bony landmarks
  • Describe types of joints and their specific movements
  • Identify the types and structure of muscles
  • Define muscle contraction physiology

Module 3: The Nervous System (2.0 CEU AHIMA; 2.5 AAPC Continuing Education Hours)

  • Describe the nervous system structure
  • Distinguish between the central and peripheral nervous systems
  • Define the nervous system physiology
  • Define and describe the senses

Module 4: The Blood and Endocrine Systems (1.0 CEU AHIMA; 1.0 AAPC Continuing Education Hours)

  • Describe the constituents of blood, blood cell types, and blood typing
  • Define homeostasis
  • Distinguish between different types of hormones and their functions

Module 5: The Cardiovascular System (1.0 CEU AHIMA; 1.0 AAPC Continuing Education Hours)

  • Identify the structures of the cardiovascular system
  • Describe the physiology of heart muscle contraction
  • Define the cardiac cycle
  • Specify blood pressure control mechanisms
  • Identify vascular structures

  • Describe structure and function of the lymphatic system
  • Distinguish between specific and non-specific immunity
  • Identify immune system cells

  • Define structures and physiology of the respiratory system

  • Describe the digestive system structures and physiology

  • Identify the urinary system structures
  • Describe the processes of urine formation
  • Define urinary physiology
  • Define mechanisms of fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Distinguish between fluid and electrolyte abnormalities
  • Define acid-base buffer systems and abnormalities
  • Identify reproductive structures of the male and female
  • Describe the male and female reproductive physiology

Upon registration participants will receive a welcome email and log-in information. Once this email is sent participants will have one week to open the course. No refunds will be provided after a week from the date of this email, or once the course is clicked open by the participant. Cancellations prior to opening the on-line course within these seven days will be entitled to a full refund and must be received in writing via email at Participants are entitled to a full refund if the provider cancels the activity.


The course will be open for registration from January 21 – December 13, 2013. Once the participant opens the course they will have 5 months to complete the entire course. All courses/modules must be completed by December, regardless of the registration date. For example, if a participant registers February 1, their course will expire July 1. However, if the participant registers November 1, the course will still expire December 13.

A one-time extension may be provided, but ALL courses will end on December 13. An additional $34.95 will be required to extend the course.
